DISASTER PREPAREDNESS

Peggy Krysiak, our Village Liaison for the Community Association of The Woodlands gave a very informative talk on how to prepare for disaster.  Hurricanes were the main focus, but the same information would apply in other disasters as well.  Peggy highly suggested making a plan and assembling a kit.

The plan should include meeting with family members and having an out of town contact name to be the source of communications.  Families should also have an agreed upon place to meet in the event you can not return home.  Plans should include pets.

The kit would include items your family would need should you have to evacuate quickly.  To learn more of what this kit should include there are several websites you may visit:  www.fema.gov  and www.redcross.org or www.ready.gov

UPDATE FROM THE ANNEXATION COMMITTEE

We’d like to encourage all residents to attend a public hearing on Wednesday, August 29th at 9:00 AM at The Woodlands Waterway Marriott Hotel and Convention Center.  The purpose of the public hearings is to prepare for the November election and obtain feedback from the residents.

What exactly are we voting on in November?  We will vote on two measures.  One is to expand The Woodlands Township (formerly TCID) borders, and second is to change the current make up of the board.

TCID which stood for Town Center Improvement District now called The Woodlands Township is a special purpose district set up to collect sales and hotel occupancy tax while providing services and encouraging economic development.  Its original borders include Town Center (the Mall, Market Street, The Woodlands Waterway, College Park shopping centers, etc.)

At this point it’s important to remember that incorporating The Woodlands into a city is a process.

The expansion of The Woodlands Township borders would act as an umbrella encompassing all of The Woodlands.  This means that the villages west of I-45, Harper’s Landing & Trade Center east of I-45, and Creekside Village in Harris County will all be brought together under this umbrella.  So, that is the first measure.

The second measure is changing the current make up of The Woodlands Township Board.  Currently, there are appointed board members from various entities such as Oak Ridge, Shenandoah, The Woodlands Development Company, TWA, WCA and the Woodlands Commercial Association that serve.  The new board would consist of a seven members elected by the residents.

The Annexation Committee is an official "ad-hoc" committee of CPVA and meets the 2nd Monday of the month.  All interested residents are invited to attend.  Meetings have been temporarily suspended until the fall and we assist in the November confirmation election. Please contact Scott Singletary, Annexation Committee Chair at 936-321-9190 for more information.

LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT

Dear Friends, Neighbors and Fellow Residents of College Park,

It seems only yesterday that the kids were getting out of school.  Soon, we will be seeing many school-age children waiting for buses on our way to and from work.  Please keep an eye out and drive carefully.  Remember, it is against the law to pass a stopped school bus.  We are proud of our young children and want to keep them safe.

National Night Out was August 7 at Harper's Landing Park.  I would like to thank some of our sponsors for the food and supplies donated to make this community-wide event such a success.  First, thanks to our life guards who keep our children safe.  They do an amazing job and we don't thank them enough.  Thank you to Kroger for the cakes and sodas, to Chuck E Cheese for the paper goods, to Randall's for the hot dogs, to First Choice for the water bottles, and to McAllister's for the sweet tea.  Thank you also to all of the volunteers who helped to put on the event and to all of the emergency personnel who came to the park.

Our meeting this Monday will feature a guest speaker from the Parks & Recreation department.  Please come and find out all about what they do for us and we will also take questions from the residents in attendance.  We will also have a deputy speak at the meeting to discuss the community policing plan in The Woodlands.  It is very important that residents attend meetings to get this information and learn about your community.

As you know, we will be making some decisions about the future of The Woodlands in the November election.  In order to vote in this election, you must be registered to vote 30 days prior to the election.  We will have a guest speaker at our September election from The Woodlands Decides.  This group does not tell you how to vote, but simply gives the straight facts about the pros and cons of the propositions on the ballot.  I hope to see many of you at both the August and September meetings.
