CPVA MEETING MINUTES

July 21, 2003 7:30 p.m.

  • 7:31- Meeting called to order by Kay Mciver, introduction of officers. 7:34- Introduction of guest speakers Dagang Chen and Jody Schoger of The Woodlands Symphony. 7:35-Dagang Chen, Woodlands Symphony director of music, speaks on the success of the symphony and how they are looking to have more friendly relationships with various communities. "The black tie image of the symphony is non existent here" Last season they did they're first Messiah performance and had over 3300 in attendance. They visit many area schools and last year invited 40 children from local schools to a performance of West Side Story. Q>Is there a junior symphony? A>Yes and no, we do not have an actual symphony yet, but we are trying to get the word out that we are looking for a dedicated group of young people that really want to do this. Q> How often do you have concerts? A> 6-7 times a year Q> Do you perform children's concerts? A> Our concerts are designed for all age groups. Q> How old is The Woodlands Symphony? A>We are going into our eleventh season. 7:54-Jody Schoger,the Woodlands Symphony Director of development and Public Relations adds that they are always looking for volunteers in the community to pitch in and help , and urges residents to at least come and listen to the music. Concerts are Sunday's at 4pm and are usually over by 5: 30. 8:00-Consideration of minutes from June, motion made to accept with the exception of correcting typos, motion passes and carries. 8:06- Treasurer's report given by Kay McIver 8:07-Village Liaison's report given by Holly Steinke 8:14-Discussion of dates for community picnic and Fall Festival. For the picnic, August 23rd with a rain date of August 30th is proposed, and the Fall Festival, October 4th with a rain date of October 11th is proposed, motion made to accept these dates, motion passes and carries. 8:22-Budget Committee letter sent to Sherman Yehl on June 23rd. Letter requests beautification to Harper's Landing entry sign, a bronze statue in our Harper's Landing Park, beautification to be done along Harper's Landing Blvd., and a request for anything possible to be done to keep Harper's Landing part of The Woodlands. 8:31- Booth Spaces for the fall Flea Market go on sale September 27th, we need 2 volunteers for this. Shifts will be 8:30-10:00am, 10-11:30am, and 11:30-1pm. 8:36-College Park Village Association will be holding a workshop at The Outback Steakhouse on August 9th. 8:39- Civic and residential committee report: 34 Wimberly Way Cleanup scheduled for July 22nd, foreclosure is taking place and the home will be put up for auction. Still working on 58 Wimberly Way, but some improvements have been made. Report on the proposed extension of Harper’s Landing Blvd: Deborah Staley with The Woodlands Operating Company claims there are no plans for it to happen at this time, but nothing saying it may not happen in the future, though putting another railroad crossing in would be difficult. Finally, in reference to the pipeline running through our neighborhood, it turns out this is something that is mailed to random residents informing them of what to look for when looking for major pipelines. 8:50- David Park, republican candidate for Montgomery County Sheriff, speaks briefly on his 17 years as a Lieutenant with 23 people working under him. He was born and raised in Montgomery County and both he and his wife work for the Sheriff’s department. Lt. Park speaks on his wanting money from traffic violations to go towards funding more sheriffs on patrol in The Woodlands. He says the rest of the funding could come from housing inmates for other counties. He has plans for a major crime unit dealing with aggravated robberies, homicides, etc.
  • Q> Does the Sheriff’s Department have a good relationship with the District Attorney’s office and the County Attorney’s office?
  • We do not work with the County Attorney’s office that much but we do have a very good relationship with the District Attorney’s office.
  • Q>Would you still be willing to have your sheriffs come out to Neighborhood Watch meetings?
  • Absolutely I would like to make it to a few of those myself. Resident comment> I think there should be more visibility of deputies throughout The Woodlands. David Park response> I agree
  • Q> what is the ratio of Harris County sheriffs to Montgomery County?
  • I really don’t know.
  • Q>Is the lack of deputies a budget problem?
  • always 9:22- Lt. Park is thanked for his time. 9:23- Welcome to new residents at the meeting. Floor open to resident questions/concerns. 9:24-resident request for a curve sign to be put on Harper’s Landing Blvd. Q> Is there mosquito control in College Park? A>yes, they have been spraying.
